St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is having quite a day against the lowly Washington Nationals.

The game is still underway, but Yadi tried to make sure his Cards are in a position to win their third straight game and eighth in their last 11 contests.

The catcher hit home runs in his first two at-bats of the game, his third and fourth dingers of the season.

As impressive as it sounds  (it is, especially for a 40-year-old catcher), that was not the highlight of his day.

Molina and starting pitcher Adam Wainwright tied the AL/NL record for starts made by a battery at 324.

You can read that very quickly, but perhaps we don’t realize just how many years it took them to reach that number.

The best part is that they will have the chance to establish a new record next week, and fans will be there to show recognition and admiration for the two veteran performers.

Wainwright remains very much an elite performer, but Molina is clearly not the same at this point.

Even after the big day at the plate, he is hitting .226/.247/.317 with four homers and a mediocre .564 OPS in 221 trips to the plate.

His two-run blast in the second inning was his first home run since May 15.

He added another one a couple of innings later to tie the game at four runs apiece.

At the moment of writing this piece, the Nationals were up 6-4 in the seventh inning.

The end result, when all is said and done, probably won’t matter that much: Molina and Wainwright have made history as teammates, and their record will be very hard to top.
