In addition to running a comprehensive summer sailing program for members, the club hosts a number of regattas and championships. First established in 1878, the club has been extensively renovated and extended throughout its history, and in spring 2019, the main bar on the first floor of the clubhouse was rebuilt to provide a light, contemporary space from which to enjoy panoramic views of the Solent.

In summer 2022, the Royal Solent Yacht Club chose Dura Composites to provide its Dura Deck Tiles in a pebble gray to enhance the facilities of its balcony and terrace area, providing a wood-look, anti-slip composite timber flooring that’s suitable for all footwear and weather conditions. The interlocking tiles are simple and quick to lay, and don’t need expensive bearers or joist systems to sit on, according to Dura Composites. Moreover, they can be added on top of any existing firm and flat surface, such as the concrete clubhouse terrace at the Yacht Club, where they helped achieve the look and feel of traditional timber decking, but with none of the installation challenges.

“We are delighted with the premium look that has been achieved by using Dura Deck Tiles on the Club’s terrace, which complements the clean lines and contemporary design of our bar area,” Claire Hallett, CEO and club secretary for the Royal Solent Yacht Club, says. “The tiles were quick and easy for us to lay ourselves, but instantly transformed the terrace into a more appealing and accessible space during the day and evening.”

Applications aren't as demanding as airframe composites, but requirements are still exacting — passenger safety is key.

As the wind energy market continues to grow, competition heats up between glass and carbon fiber composites for turbine blades.

Compared to legacy materials like steel, aluminum, iron and titanium, composites are still coming of age, and only just now are being better understood by design and manufacturing engineers. However, composites’ physical properties — combined with unbeatable light weight — make them undeniably attractive.
