SHORT GAP, W.Va. (WV News) — A new opponent and an old rival. That’s what the Frankfort Falcons boys’ soccer squad has faced to open the season. First, Saturday on the road at Preston, the new face. Then, Tuesday at home, against Hampshire.
The results have been good, but could have been better. The good was the 6-0 victory at Preston to open the season. The still good, but could have been better, was a 4-4 tie with Hampshire at home in game two.
At Preston, the Falcons got off to an ultra-hot start, scoring five goals in the first half to take a 5-0 lead into intermission. Those goals came from Levi Sgaggero, Carson Adams, Braxton Pyles, Stephen Shambaugh, and Cam Lynch.
The five-goal lead at halftime allowed the Falcons to liberally substitute in the second half and get some field time for the balance of the roster.
In the second half, a second goal by Carson Adams took the final tally to 6-0 in favor of the Falcons.
“The boys played very, very well. We opened the first half with a five-goal lead and completely took charge of the game by halftime. So, I was able to get the entire JV squad game time experience in the second half,” Frankfort coach Patrick Brett stated.
According to Brett, “It was a nice easy win for us. But the boys were up for it. They went out there and made it happen. So that was a nice way to start the season.”
Then came Tuesday and a much-anticipated matchup with neighbor and rival Hampshire. Things didn’t start well for the Falcons as the Trojans reached out to a 2-0 lead to start the game.
But the Falcons responded with two first-half goals of their own to tie the game. Both goals were scored by Braxton Pyles, the first being off a header.
Tied 2-2 at the half, the Falcons would get two second-half goals from Cameron Lynch, the first off a penalty kick and the second off a free kick.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, Hampshire would also get two goals in the second half, the final goal being by Jordan Gray with only 20 seconds remaining to tie the game for good at 4-4.
Hampshire got two goals from Dylan Streisel, one goal from Dom Strawn, and the other from Jordan Gray.
Frankfort got two goals each from Braxton Pyles and Cameron Lynch.
It was an exciting, nail-biting contest that literally went down to the wire. Each team would certainly liked to have achieved the win, but will have to settle for the tie.
“We started to slow and gave them two goals. After that, we were in charge. They scored in injury time to tie the game. But, after going two-down, a tie is a good result against a good Hampshire team. I’m really pleased with the performance. But, we’ve got to tighten up defensively, and start stronger,” Brett stated.
According to Brett, “We were slow starting, that was the problem. Once we got in our stride, we were the better team.”
